Petiție pentru Salvarea Catacombelor Brăilene

Petiție adresată Direcția județene pentru cultură a județului Brăila

Prin această petiție cerem în mod expres Direcției Județene pentru Cultură a Județului Brăila demararea procesului de clasare a întregului sistem al Catacombelor Brăilene.

Catacombele Brăilene, mai numite și hrubele Brăilene, reprezintă un sistem de galerii subterane unice în Europa și poate și în lume, ce făceau parte din sistemul de comunicare și apărare al cetății otomane a Brăilei între mijlocul secolului al XVI-lea și 1821.

În lucrarea sa “„Orașul”de sub oraș.Subteranele Cetății Brăilei între realitate istorică și mit urban”domnul Conferențiar Universitar Dr.  Costin Croitoru explorează multe sursele istorice ce mentionează existența precum și rolul acestor hrube și prezintă detalii esențiale referitoare la istoria și identitatea orașului Brăila.

Nenumarate articole din presă prezintă hrubele Brăilei împreună cu speranța că ele vor fi explorate și măsuri vor fi luate pentru conservarea lor.
“Brăilenii din Centrul Vechi păstrează, încă, porţiuni din vechile tuneluri folosite de turci, secole la rând-locul tainic unde era ascuns aurul Semilunii. Oraş de legendă, Brăila poartă în pântece urmele celui mai mare sistem defensiv construit vreodată de-a lungul Dunării, de către turcii care au stăpânit-o aproape trei sute de ani:catacombele, numite aici hrube.

Secole la rând, bogăţiile raialei şi ale Ţării Româneşti luau drumul Stambulului prin portul „Ibrailei" şi nu puţini au fost cei care au râvnit la aurul păzit cu străşnicie de ieniceri. […]

Porţiuni ale hrubelor - păienjeniş de tuneluri folosite de otomani - se mai găsesc şi astăzi, ascunse la mai bine de zece metri sub caldarâm, uneori pe două-trei nivele, în Centrul Vechi. Vechea pulberărie de pe strada Cetăţii, unde-şi ţineau mai apoi brăilenii budanele, tunelurile de pe Bulevard, Ştefan cel Mare şi Împăratul Traian - sunt numai câteva din tainicele locuri unde se află catacombele. ” (sursa  https://historia.ro/sectiune/actualitate/povestea-orasului-subteran-catacombele-brailei-583645.html)

“Denumite de braileni hrube, catacombele s-au transformat acum in pivnițe. Nu doar turcii si-au lasat amprenta. […]Aproape ca nu exista casa veche in Braila care sa nu aiba la subsol o hruba. Sau macar legaturi cu vechea retea de catacombe a otomanilor. Legendele din partea locului spun ca prin sistemul de catacombe se putea ajunge usor in spatele ostilor invadatoare sosite la Dunare. Pe de alta parte, hrubele erau folosite ca spații de depozitare a averilor stranse in trecut de otomani. […] Istoricii brăileni au cerut de nenumarate ori ca macar portiuni din vechile hrube sa fie restaurate și amenajate, ca să poata fi incluse în circuitul turistic. Din păcate, însă, dupa anii ’50, autoritațile brailene au decis să le acopere cu nisip, după ce mai multe cladiri noi au fost la un pas să se surpe. Aceste hrube fac parte din istoria și identitatea orașului Brăila. Ele au valoare istorică și locală inestimabile.  Este datoria noastră, a generației noastre să păstreze și să protejeze aceste valori istorice cu impact major atât asupra istoriei naționale cât și a identității locale.

Cerem în mod expres Direcției Județene pentru Cultură a Județului Brăila demararea în cel mai scurt timp a procesului de clasare a întregului sistem al Catacombelor Brailene. Acest proces necesită cercetare istorică, de arhive, în țară și de teren, ridicarea în plan și demersuri administrative, care presupun alcătuirea unui program multianual cu o finanțare corespunzătoare.

Institutul National al Patrimoniului precum si domnul Conf. Dr. Costin Croitoru, manager al Muzeului Brăilei “Carol I”, ne-au asigurat de intregul lor suport odata ce procesul a fost demarat.

Petition to Braila County Directorate for Culture to Save the Catacombs of Braila.

Through this petition, we hereby expressly request County of Braila Directorate for Culture to start the process of classing the entire system of the catacombs situated under Braila town as historical site.

The catacombs under the town of Braila represent a system of underground galleries unique in Europe and perhaps even in the world, which were part of the communication and defense system of the Ottoman Empire fortress of Braila between the middle of the 16th century and 1821.

In his work "The city under the city. The undergrounds of the Braila fortress between historical reality and urban myth", professor and lecturer Costin Croitoru PhD explores various historical sources mentioning the existence and role of these catacombs and gives essential details regarding the history and identity of the town of Braila.  


Countless articles in the press describe Braila's catacombs and underground system along with the hope that they will be explored, and the right protective measures will be taken for their preservation.

The people residing in Braila’s Old Town still safeguard under their houses sections of the old tunnels used by the Turks for centuries, the secret places where the gold of the Ottomans was hidden. A city of legend, Brăila bears in its belly the traces of the largest defensive system ever built along the Danube, by the Turks who ruled it for almost three hundred years: the catacombs. For centuries, the riches of the Romanian kingdoms and land were claimed by the Ottoman Empire and were shipped to Istambul through the port of "Ibrail"/Braila under the watchful eye and scimitars of the Janissaries. […] Portions of the catacombs, a spider web of tunnels used by the Ottomans, can still be found today, hidden more than ten meters under the cobblestones of the Old Town, sometimes on two or three levels. The old powder factory, where the people of Braila later stored their barrels and the tunnels on “Stephen the Great” & “Emperor Traian” Boulevards are just a few of the mysterious places where the catacombs are located. Called catacombs or caves by the town folk of Braila, they have now turned into cellars. Not only the Turks left their mark. […]There is almost no old house in Braila that does not have a cellar. Or at least links to the old catacomb network built by the Ottomans. Local legends say that through the system of catacombs town defenders could easily sneak behind and attack an invading army arriving across the Danube. On top of their military purpose, the catacombs were used as storage for the treasures and spoils gathered in the past by the Ottomans. […] Historians from Braila have requested countless of times that at least portions of the old catacombs be restored and displayed, so that they can become a tourist attraction. Unfortunately, after the 1950s, the local authorities decided to cover them with sand, after several new buildings were one step away from collapsing. These catacombs are part of the history and identity of Braila. They have inestimable historical and local value and it is the duty of our generation to preserve these historical values with a major impact on both national history and local identity.

We expressly ask Braila County Directorate for Culture to start the process of classing the entire system of the Braila catacombs as historical site. This requires the establishment of a multi-year program with appropriate funding so proper historic & archival research can be undertaken.

The National Heritage Institute as well as Conf. Dr. Costin Croitoru, manager of the "Carol I" Museum in Braila assured us of their support once the process has been initiated by the Braila County Directorate for Culture
