I discovered Sibiu, after I heard about Astra Film Festival, a festival that is well known to documentary filmmakers world-wide. I attended the festival two years ago, and ended up spending three weeks in a city, which I grew to love. If it wasn't for Astra Film Festival, I would have never visited Sibiu. It is beyond my comprehension why the Town Hall withdraws the financial support for this festival, which has put Sibiu on the world cultural map and brings visitors who spend money in the area. Until now I had a very good impression about the leaders of Sibiu, but sadly this type of news makes me change my mind. At a moment when there are not many good things that Romania is known internationally for, Astra Film is a beacon of cultural light, which should make the people of Sibiu, and Romanians in general, proud. Why are politicians in Romania so easily prepared to destroy a good thing that took years to build??
